Portree High School Retain The Somhairle MacLean Cup. | |
17 April 2009 Plockton started the match well and Murdo Cameron twice went close to giving the home side the lead. Jamie Patterson in the Portree goal was the busier keeper in the early stages and he kept his side in the match on a couple of occasions. Portree buckshee back Martin Bruce had a busy time containing Plockton danger-man Finlay Stark and Donald Nixon and Ben Dalgetty were putting in strong performances in the Plockton centre line. Portree brought Shockie MacLennan back to full centre with Stewart Grant moving into the forward line and Portree started to come more into the game. Stewart Grant and had a shot saved by Plockton keeper Peter Hickman and Danny Morrison linked up with John Gillies with the later shooting over. Jordan Murchison always looked lively and the young Islanders finished the first half strongly. The second half was only 8 minutes old when Danny Morrison collected a Martin Bruce free hit and fired just wide. Portree were getting closer and moments later Shockie MacLennan burst forward from midfield and found Morrison and he set up John Gillies to score the decisive opening goal. Just minutes later, another Martin Bruce free hit found Stewart Grant who played in Danny Morrison and as he gained a yard on his marker, he turned and sent a low shot past Hickman into the net. Plockton had showed too much energy in the game to collapse and just 3 minutes later, Ben Dalgetty showed great determination to score and pull his side right back into the game. Danny Morrison sealed the win for Portree when he linked up with Jordan Murchison and sent a great shot from the left into the roof of the Plockton net. Portree captain Shockie MacLennan was presented with the trophy at the after match reception and Danny Morrison was voted the top Portree High School player with Finlay Stark winning the Plockton vote. This rounds off a good week for Portree as their U14 sixes side won the Robertson Cup at Drum na Drochit on Wednesday 15 April 2009.
