17 April 2009 Skye Camanachd in North America - Cuairt gu California 2009 There is to be an information meeting about the Skye Camanachd in North America - Cuairt gu California 2009 this Wednesday 22 April 2009in the Tongadale Hotel, Portree. This historic tie-up with the Northern California Camanachd Club will see a group of around 20 leave Skye and spend two weeks in the San Francisco Bay Area promoting shinty and Skye to an international audience. The trip is being structured round a four day visit to the Pleasanton Highland Games, one of the World’s largest events of this kind. There will also be a shinty / hurling international against the San Francisco GAA. The plan is to fly from Glasgow to San Francisco International Airport on Tuesday 25 August 2009 and returning on Tuesday 8 September 2009 by the same route. The travelling party will be based for most of the trip at the world-renowned Stanford University with access to their facilities and then transferring to the Games Hotel at Pleasanton. The cost for the whole fortnight is £1,300. Some members have expressed their desire to travel independently and the cost for them is £900. This includes flights, bed and breakfast at Stanford, bed and board at Pleasanton Highland Games Hotel and group transport during the stay. The bank account is now open and as time is short, a sizeable deposit will be required. All those travelling should ensure that they are eligble for entrance to the United States and have the necessary travel insurance. Unfortunately Highland 2007 turned down the committee’s application for financial support but the committe are still exploring all avenues of possible support.
