12 April 2009 The Marine Harvest Premier League, the Balliemore Cup and the Sutherland Cups took centre stage on Saturday 11 April 2009. Oban Camanachd were league leaders going into the day’s fixtures and they took the lead against Kingussie didn’t have it all their own way against Glenurquhart at Drumnadrochit. A Ronald Ross penalty gave them the lead after 42 minutes but Calum Miller levelled for the home side just 2 minutes later. Ali Borthwick restored the Kings lead after the break and Ross scored his second and Kingussie’s third after 65 minutes. Newtonmore’s title chances took a blow when a Tom Whyte strike in the last minute won Kyles Athletic a share of the points at the Eilan. The visitors took a first half lead through Duncan Kerr but a David Cheyne double looked to have won More 2 valuable points before Whyte’s late leveller. Newtonmore’s discipline problems resurfaced when David Campbell was sent off. A Grant Griffen strike after only 5 minutes gave Inveraray a great start against Lochaber but Zander Ferguson score on the hour mark to win the Kilmallie hit-man Trevor Jackson put Beauly to the sword in the first round of the Balliemore Cup, scoring four goals – two in each half. Fraser Mathie and John Stewart bagged first half strikes with Mathie scoring again in the second half. A last minute strike from Barrie MacDonald was little consolation for Beauly as Kilmallie ran out 7-1 winners. Kilmallie now travel to Kirkton to take on Kinlochshiel in the next round. Caberfeidh went one better with an impressive 8-0 win over Oban Celtic at Castle Leod. Stuart Krzyzanoski scored a first half hat-trick and David Mellis, Kevin Bartlett, and Kirk Taylor also scored during the first period to put Cabers in easy street. Two goals in the last 9 minutes from Ali MacLennan and Lee Nicol completed the scoring and Cabers now go on to host Ballachulish or Kilmory in the quarter finals. Strathglass might have had a convincing league win against Kinlochshiel had a walk over against Tayforth as the Holders Kilmallie have gone out of the Sutherland Cup at the first hurdle after they lost out in a penalty shoot-out at Inveraray. The 90 minutes and extra time period saw the sides finish 4-4. Lewis MacNicol, Darren Pirrie and a double from Neil Shaw were scorers for the home side with a Mark Graham double and strikes from Ali MacKay and Scott Campbell replying for Kilmallie. So it’s Inveraray who go through to face Glenurquhart at Drumnadrochit in round two. Last season’s runners up Two hours of shinty couldn’t separate Lochside Rovers and Kingussie in Oban as they shared an incredible 12 goals. It was the Kings who held their nerve to win the penalty shout-out by 4-3 and they will now host Glengarry in the second round. A Stuart Gregory double gave Glengarry victory over neighbours Lochaber at Invergarry. Lochbroom made the long trip to Yoker to play Glasgow Mid Argyll but were edged out 5-3. Craig Anderson gave Mid Argyll a 2 minute lead but John Talbet levelled just 3 minutes later. The visitors went ahead after 20 minutes through Cameron MacRae but Andy McGee squared the match at the interval with a 40th minute goal. Glenurquhart’s great start to the season continued with a 5-0 win at Beauly. Andrew Fyton gave them a 6 minute lead with the only goal of the first half. Ben Hosie made it two after 49 minutes and young Ewen Brady followed up last week’s hat-trick with a 61 minute strike. A double from Bradley Dickson after 71 and 82 minutes completed the scoring. First half goals from Terry Stebbings and Steven MacKenzie looked to have put Newtonmore won 3-0 at Farr against Boleskine and will now travel to Cannich to play Strathglass in the second round after they beat Taynuilt 6-2 after extra time. Strathglass had doubles from Ali MacAdam and Gordie Fraser, and Rupert Williamson and Josh Fraser got their others. Willie Gillies and Willie Neilson were the Taynuilt scorers. The Skye Camanachd v Lovat tie in Portree was another which went to extra time. Skye raced into a two goal lead with strikes from Danny Morrison and Peter Gordon. Jimmy MacKenzie pulled Lovat back into the game with a goal 3 minutes after the break and James Matheson levelled on the hour mark. However Danny Morrison hit his second a minute later to restore Skye’s lead but Matheson netted again 15 minutes from the end. Matheson went on to complete his hat-trick in the second period of extra time to earn Lovat a home tie with The SCOTS gave a great account of themselves against Kinlochshiel at Kirkton. They took the lead 3 minutes after the break through Martin Neil but Ross Fraser levelled for Shiel just 2 minutes later. Shiel won the tie through with a last, gasp injury time strike from substitute Scott Kennedy. Ali MacKay hit four as Kyles Athletic won 5-0 at Col Glen. Angus Finlayson scored the other and Kyles now play Kinlochshiel at Tigh na Bruach in the second round. |
