07 March 2009 The new shinty season started with a familiar face stealing the limelight. Ronald Ross scored the first goal of the day on a heavy Ross went on to score two more and complete his hat-trick in the first 13 minutes to give his side a 3-0 half time lead. Kevin Thain made it four just 5 minutes into the second half and Paul Gow put the Kings out of sight 7 minutes later. Lachlan Campbell pulled a goal back for Lochaber 15 minutes from the end but Ross scored his fourth and Kingussie’s sixth a minute later. Young Ben Delaney scored the final goal of the game for the home side to make the final score 6-2 to the reigning champions. In the only other match in the Premier League to survive the weather, Newtonmore served Glenurquhart with a harsh lesson on life in the top division with a 5-0 win at the Eilan. Norman Campbell gave More the lead after 35 minutes and Paul MacArthur made it two 5 minutes later. Skye Camanachd sit on top of Marine Harvest North Division 1 with a 4-0 win over Inverness at the Beauly and Kinlochshiel shared the points with a 1-1 draw at Braeview. Gordy MacDonald, back after a long injury, gave Shiel the lead after 20 minutes. Beauly had Sandy Tulloch sent off before Barrie MacDonald secured a share of the points from the penalty spot on the hour mark Caberfeidh hosted Kilmallie and the found themselves three goals down after half an hour to a John Stewart hat-trick. Kevin Bartlett pulled a goal back after 77 minutes but it was too little, too late and the points went to the away side. In Marine Harvest South Division 1, Glasgow Mid Argyll ran out convincing 5-0 winners against Kilmory at Yoker. David Robertson scored a hat-trick and Gary Luke and Donald Colville scored the others. Ballachulish travelled to Maine Harvest North Division 2 probably produced the shock of the day as Glenurquhart made a great start to life in the higher league, beating last seasons run away champions Kingussie won the second string Badenoch derby with goals from Craig Dawson and Martin Dallas giving them a 2-1 victory. Paul MacKintosh replied for Newtonmore. In the final match played in this league, Martin Cameron gave Glengarry a 7 minute lead over Lovat at Balgate. However the home side responded and Owen Ferguson levelled 5 minutes before the break. James MacPherson won the match for Lovat with a goal in 77 minutes. Only one match was played in Marine Harvest South Division 2 as Kyles Athletic crossed the water to take on There was a full programme in Marine Harvest North Division 3 as all the matches beat the weather. Lochcarron continued their good early season form with a 3-0 win at Kincraig. Iain Cameron hit a double and Kenny Murray scored the other. A Jamie MacFadyen strike 10 minutes from the end gave Lochbroom a single goal win over Beauly whilst Ardnamurchan will be delighted with their 3-2 home win over Boleskine. Kevin Hunter hit a double for Boleskine but goals from John Strachan, John Nudds and JD MacMaster gave the home side victory. Strathglass beat Lochaber 5-1 at Cannich. Gordon Fraser scored twice and Seth Jones, Kieran Mellans and Luke Williamson scored the others. Patrick Toal scored Lochaber’s consolation goal. |
