Portree Primary School has won the 2009 P7 National First Shinty Festival in Fort william on 28 February 2009.
This is the second time that Portree has won this competition having previously won in 2005 with a 2-1 victory over Milngavie and Bearsden.
Portree started the competition strongly winning all six of their league games without conceding a goal.
They opened the competition by beating Strachur 2-0. They followed that up with a similar win over Lochaber and they then beat Lochgilpead 3-0. A 2-0 win over Kinlochbervie was followed with a 2-0 victory over Beauly. Portree concluded the section with an emphatic 6-0 win over Meadowburn.
The semi finals placed Section A winners Portree against Section B runners up Rockfield. The other semi final was between Milngavie & Bearsden and Lochaber.
Rockfield took the lead against Portree in a hard fought first semi final but the islanders equalised through Willie Cowie. Rockfield led again in the second hald and they tried to defend intense Portree pressure but when Willie Cowie was blatantly upended in the penalty area, Portree were given the chance to take the match into the goalden goal phase. Cowie picked himself up and showed no sign of nerves as he blasted the ball into the net to level the match. The Portree hero in the goalden goal period was Andrew Grant as he fired his team into the final.
Lochaber won the second semi final. beating Milngavie & Bearsden 5-2.
Portree had already beaten Lochaber 2-0 in their section match and they quickly stamped their authority on the final with a double from Angie Grant. Lochaber pulled a goal back before Grant completed his hat-trick. As Portree introduced their substitutes late in the match, Lochaber scored again to make the final score 3-2 in Portree's favour.
At the end of the match, a delighted Portree captain Angie Grant was presented with the 2009 P7National First Shinty Festival trophy.
