The Uist shinty stars of tomorrow took part in the first ever clash for the Lachlan McQuien under-14 Memorial Shield on Hogmanay.
The content between the East Side and West Side of North Uist and Benbecula was extremely competitive with both sides showing good displays of attacking and defensive skills.
Seumas Boyle and Robbie Anderson were solid in defence West side while Ewen Campbell and Alasdair Ferguson continually battled for possession in the centre line.
The West Side forwards started showing good attacking play with Calum Ferguson and Angus MacInnes proving to be quite a handful for the East Side back line of Fraser Ballantyne and Douglas Moncaster.
West Side’s Alasdair Ferguson played a good ball through to younger brother Calum who had a clear run at goal but after a stramash in the D, he hit the post with his final effort.
The East Side then put together some good attacking play which resulted in the first goal of the game when Ewen Campbell won the ball in the centre and found forward Craig Erskine who made a great pass to Sean Brady who slipped the ball past the keeper.
West Side keeper Oisin Buckley then made two excellent saves, preventing his side going further behind. The East Side maintained their lead to half time thanks to some solid defending by Ballantyne and Moncaster and keeper David MacDonald.
The second half started with West Side’s Fazel Froughi coming into defence and Seumas Boyle moving forward and he quickly equalised for West Side.
West Side then mounted a concentrated attack and eventually took the lead when a shot from Alasdair Ferguson evaded East Side keeper MacDonald.
East Side had a period of possession but they struggled to find the net. There were some great clashes between Ewen Campbell and Alasdair Ferguson and also between Seumas Boyle and Douglas Moncaster.
With the last hit of the game, Seumas Boyle sent a superb long range shot straight into the net to give West Side a 3-1 winning margin.
West side captain Alasdair Ferguson, surely the man of the match, accepted the Lachlan McQuien Shield from Angus MacInnes.
The trophy was presented by Mrs Mary MacInnes, daughter of the late Lachlan McQuien who was the last surviving member of the victorious 1907 Tigharry team.
His grandson, Angus MacInnes, donated the Shield for the juniors and his great-grandson Angus MacInnes played for the West Side junior team.
