Portree High School finished 4th in the 10 team Great Glen U16 Shinty Tournament for the Robertson Cup.
Portree were drawn in a tough secton with Lochaber, Dingwall, Glenurquhart A and Ardnamurchan. They started well with a 2-0 win over Ardnamurchan. Ian Morrison gave them the lead after 7 minutes and Stewart Grant got the second after a long range shot from Martin Bruce was saved by the Ardnamurchan keeper and Ian Morrison was first to react to the rebound and set up Grant to score.
Portree's second match was against competition favourites Lochaber. Ally MacLeod was the first keeper to be called into action as turned a fierce Lochaber drive over the bar after just 4 minutes. Despite going a goal down just before half time, Portree rallied and scored a great equaliser when Paul MacKinnon picked a Martin Bruce goal hit out of the air and turned to fire into the net. Ian Grant had a fine game at full back against older opponents and this contributed to earn Portree a creditable 1-1 draw.
Next up for Portree were Dingwall and although a frustrating first half remained goalless, Ian Morrison opened the scoring in the first minute of the second half. The second goal came after good link up play between Stewart Grant and Paul MacKinnon set up Morrison to score his and Portree's second.
This meant that Portree had already qualified for the semi finals and so they gave substitutes Daniel Morrison and Scott MacLeod a longer run in the final league match against Glenurquhart A. Portree didn't really get going in this game and were on the end of a 2 -0 defeat.
Kingussie and Charleston finished top of the other group which also featured Kinlochleven, Plockton and Glenurquhart B.
Portree faced Kingussie in the semi final and despite having most of the first half pressure, the tie was goalless at half time. It was Kingussie who broke the deadlock and despite several chances, Portree could not find the net.
Charleston raced into a 3-0 lead against Lochaber in the other semi final. Lochaber pulled 2 goals back and saw a last minute penalty saved by the Charleston keeper as the Inverness side made it into the final.
It was a disappointed Portree and Lochaber who played in a subdued 3/4 place play off. Lochaber took an early 2 goal lead and although Ian Morrison pulled a goal back, Lochaber eventually ran out 3-1 winners.
Kingussie defeated Charleston 4-2 in the final to take the cup to Badenoch.
Charleston's Greig Matheson was named player of the tournament.
The Portree High School squad was Ally MacLeod, Ian Grant, Martin Bruce, Stewart Grant (captain), Ian Morrison, Paul MacKinnon, Daniel Morrison, Scott MacLeod.
