12 September 2008 Portree High School sent 2 boys teams and 2 girls teams to the MacRae & Dick Shinty Festival for secondary schools. Over 200 shinty players made up the 27 teams participating in the event, which is a new initiative launched by the Camanachd Association to get more secondary Highland children playing shinty. Lochaber High School lifted the Established Teams Macrae & Dick Trophy, finishing ahead of Glenurquhart High School in second place and third placed Plockton. Culloden Academy, competing in their first ever shinty tournament, just edged out Ardnamurchan High School to win the Developing Schools Trophy. Inverness High School came third. The girls’ competition proved to be an exciting affair with Kingussie High School and Lochaber High School winning through to the final. Kirsty Deans from Kingussie scored the only goal of the final to send the Girls’ Macrae & Dick Trophy to Badenoch. Glenurquhart High School and Kinlochleven High School were beaten semi finalists. Ronald Ross, Highland Shinty Development Officer, commented, “This is a great start to the initiative that will hopefully see 29 secondary schools across the Highlands offering the sport of shinty by the end of the three year programme. The standard of shinty at new and established schools, with both boys and girls is very encouraging for the future of the sport.” |
