09 September 2008 Portree High School will be sending both boys and girls teams to the Bught Park, Inverness to participate in the Camanachd Association's first event under their new sponsorship programme with Macrae & Dick. The event on Wednesday 10th September 2008 involves secondary schools from across the Highlands. The first competition starts at 1pm and is open to Secondary School teams competing at Under 14 level and will also encompass an Under 16 girls competition. Teams are expected from as far North as Wick and Kinlochbervie to the South Highlands of Ardnamurchan and Kinlochleven. This new initiative is aimed at secondary schools and aims to increase the number of children participating in shinty in the Highlands, with the ultimate aim of all 29 secondary schools offering the sport of shinty within their school setting. The Camanachd Association’s Highland Shinty Development Officer, Ronald Ross, will lead the programme and he believes that increased participation can be achieved. “This initiative will support our work in ensuring older children have the opportunity to participate in a sport that is indigenous to their area. We want to increase participation levels within schools who currently offer the sport to pupils as well as introducing shinty to schools where the sport may not played at the moment.” Kimberley Brown, Group Marketing Manager, Macrae & Dick added “We are very encouraged by the numbers of teams who have already signed up for the programme and look forward to meeting them all at the launch event on the 10th September at Bught Park. In our 130th year of operation we are keen to continue our tradition of supporting local opportunities and this initiative endorses our vision of grass routes activities within the Highland region”. |
