The Shinty Round-up | |
01 September 2008 All the latest from Saturday 30 August 2008. Kingussie continued their seemingly inevitable march towards the Marine National Premier League title by scoring 8 goals without reply on their visit Lochaber struck a devastating blow to Strathglass’ chances of retaining their Premier League status with an impressive 6-0 home victory. Lochaber’s Ben Delaney hit a hat-trick in only 22 minutes with Hugh Innes, Martin Johnstone and Lachlan Campbell scoring the others. This was a vital result for Lochaber and lifts them above Strathglass and Kyles were 2-1 victors at Lovat with Thomas White and Duncan Kerr giving them a two goal half time lead. Ewan Ferguson replied for Lovat after 65 minutes but they couldn’t level the match and they now look increasingly marooned at the bottom of the table. A David Cheyne double gave Newtonmore had a 2-1 win at Oban Camanachd with Aiden MacIntyre replying for the home side. This result means that Oban won’t yet feel that they are out of the relegation battle. The league has effectively split in two with Kingussie, Fort William, Newtonmore and Kyles Athletic in front with 4th place Kyles on 18 points whilst Oban lead the rest on 12 points while second bottom Strathglass and Bute are on 9 points. The Marine Harvest North Division 1 title race looks like being between Kinlochshiel, Glenurquhart and Kilmallie with the last two having the advantage of games in hand. Shiel had a convincing 5-1 win in the West Coast derby at Lochcarron. Gordy MacDonald and Neil Fraser hit doubles with Keith MacRae completing the rout. Iain MacKenzie replied for Lochcarron who to be fair, were short of a full team. This win takes Kinlochshiel onto 17 points after 14 games. Glenurquhart had a fine 3-1 home win over Beauly. Calum Miller gave them the lead but Sean Stuart levelled before half time. Glen again benefited from the good form of Andrew Corrigan and Lewis MacLennan as they clinched a victory which takes their side onto 17 points from 10 games. Kilmallie gained some revenge for both their home league defeat and Balliemore Cup Final defeat to Skye when they ran out convincing 4-0 winners in Portree. It was obvious from the match that Kilmallie were the team with something to play for and the survived early Skye pressure to take a 2 goal half time lead through Fraser Massie and John Stewart. Michael Rodger and an Allan MacDonald penalty put them out of site and they are now on 13 points from 9 games played. Glenurquhart and Beauly still have to play each other home and away and the outcome of these double headers will prove crucial to the outcome of the league. In Marine Harvest North Division 2, Skye went down 2-1 at Caberfeidh. Alasdair MacLennan and Kirk Taylor gave Cabers a 2 goal lead and although player / manager pulled a goal back before the break, Skye could not convert their second half pressure into goals. Cabers move onto 9 points leaving Lochaber marooned at the bottom of the table, 2 points behind. Kingussie hit Kinlochshiel for 10 with only one in return with U14 player Thomas Borthwick grabbing 5 goals. A Mark MacDonald double gave Newtonmore a 2-0 home win over Kilmallie, a result which only helps In marine Harvest North Division 3 a double from youngster Jack MacDonald and an Allan Bruce hat-trick gave Beauly a 5-1 victory at Ardnamurchan with Allan Nairn replying for the home side. Boleskine had a good 5-1 home win over Kincraig in the Division’s other fixture. Both Beauly and Boleskine are very much in contention with leaders In the Marine Harvest South Marine Harvest Division 1, Glasgow Mid Argyll’s Mark Bain hit all 5 goals as his team beat Ballachulish 5-1 and in the league’s other match, Lochside Rovers beat Kilmory 1-0 with Michael Duncan getting the winner. Glenorchy beat Aberdour 4-1 in Marine Harvest South Division 2 and Taynuilt had a resounding 7-3 win over Glasgow Mid Argyll. |
