Skye Camanachd U14s come out on top in a 5 goal thriller at Drumnadrochit to record their second win in 2 games.
Skye Camanachd U14s followed up their win against Fort William last week with a hard fought victory at Drumnadrochidt.
The Glen started the game well and put Skye under pressure in the opening minutes. However it was Skye who took the lead in 8 minutes when Chris MacLennan fired in from the left.
The home side came back strongly though and after 23 minutes Ally MacLeod made a good stop from Kelvin MacKenzie and Ian Grant cleared the rebound. Moments later MacLeod made a similar save from Matthew Brady and again Grant cleared.
Skye responded and a 25 yard shot from Martin Bruce was just wide of the goal.
However after 32 minutes Kelvin MacKenzie broke through the Skye defence and levelled the match. Two minutes later the same player put the Glen after some poor Skye defending.
Skye had the first chance of the second half when Glenurquhart keeper Cameron MacLennan saved well from Scott MacDonald. Skye’s John Gillies hit the post moments later and the visitors just couldn’t find the goal they desperately craved. Calum Gibb was starting to turn in a good performance in the unaccustomed role of wing centre.
With 20 minutes remaining, Skye introduced 11 year old Willie Cowie and he made a significant impact on the remainder of the game. First he released Jordan Murchison down the right wing. Murchison sent a great cross into the danger area and John Gillies lost his marker to level the match.
Five minutes later, Cowie fired in a cross which the Glenurquhart defence failed to clear and Chris MacLennan scored his fourth goal in two games to give Skye the lead. A shot from Andrew Grant, who had just come on for Magnus Burd, came close to increasing Skye’s lead but the islanders still required some resolute defending to see out the remainder of the match and earn two valuable points.
Skye might not have reached the heights of their win against Fort William but their determination to grind out a win when they trailed 2-1 was evident for all to see.
After two games, Skye are the only team in North Division 1 with maximum points.
