North Restore Pride With Senior Victory. | |
02 August 2008 The North senior side restored some pride with a good 3-1 win over the South. Many had fancied the South to win this match as they had more Premier League players in their squad than their rivals. However after just 11 minute's Fort William's James Clark robbed Scott Robertson of Inveraray and sent a lovely diagonal pass to Newtonmore's Glen MacKintosh and he slipped the ball past Gary MacPherson in the South goal. Graham MacPherson of Inveraray was the busier of the two keepers and made several fine saves, including turning a Clark drive against his post. The South came back into the game in tha later part of the first half and it was North keeper Angus Morrison of Lochaber's turn to take centre stage. The South also started the second half well but after 50 minutes, against the run of play, Kilmallie's John Stewart played a through ball to Bryan Simpson and his cross allowed his Fort William team Clark to pick his spot and double the North lead. Only 5 minutes later, the South had a chance to reduce the deficit when Glenurquhart's full back John Barr stopped a shot with his foot off the ground and referee Billy Wotherspoon correctly awarded a penalty. Inveraray's David MacPherson took the hit but his effort came back off the post. The North didn't let their heads drop though and after 59 minutes, Bute's David Whitelaw made space for himself 35 yards from goal and fired in a drive which Morrison got his stick to but couldn't keep the ball out. North captain James Clark clinched victory after 76 minutes when he controlled a high ball and placed his shot past MacPherson into the net. Skye Camanachd's Alan MacLeod came on for the last 5 minutes and was involved in the action during his short appearance in the match. |
